Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar (plus additional for cinnamon sugar coating)
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon (plus extra for cinnamon sugar coating)
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup melted butter (plus additional for greasing and coating)
  • 1/4 cup sour cream (optional)

Coating

  • Sugar and cinnamon mixture for top crust (combine sugar and ground cinnamon to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Pan and Preheat the Oven: Grease a loaf pan with butter or non-stick spray. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it reaches the correct temperature while you prepare the batter.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, and ground cinnamon until evenly combined.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, beat the egg, then stir in the milk, melted butter, and sour cream if using. This mixture adds richness and moisture to the bread.
  4. Incorporate Dry Into Wet: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring gently until just combined. Avoid overmixing; a few lumps are fine to keep the bread tender.
  5. Create the Cinnamon Swirl: Mix extra sugar with cinnamon in a small bowl for the swirl. Pour half the batter into the loaf pan, sprinkle half the cinnamon sugar on top, then add the remaining batter followed by the rest of the cinnamon sugar for a layered look.
  6. Bake to Golden Perfection: Bake in the preheated oven for 45-55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. The crust should be golden and slightly crisp.
  7. Coat the Crust with Cinnamon Sugar: While the bread is still warm, brush the surface gently with melted butter and sprinkle generously with cinnamon sugar. This creates a crunchy, classic donut-style crust.
  8. Cool and Slice: Let the bread cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing. This prevents sogginess and preserves the cinnamon layers.

Notes

  • Use room temperature ingredients to help the mixture blend smoothly and create better texture.
  • Do not overmix the batter to avoid tough bread.
  • Use fresh ground cinnamon for optimal flavor and aroma.
  • Check oven temperature with a thermometer to ensure proper baking.
  • Apply butter and cinnamon sugar coating while the bread is still warm for the best crust.
