Description

These Fried Apple or Peach Pies are a comforting homemade dessert featuring a golden, crispy fried crust filled with sweet, spiced fruit. Easy to make with basic ingredients, these pies offer a flaky texture and succulent filling perfect for any occasion, without the need for an oven.

Ingredients

Scale

Pie Dough

  • Pie dough (homemade or store-bought, enough for multiple 5-6 inch circles)

Fruit Filling

  • Fresh apples or peaches (firm and ripe, peeled and chopped, approx. 3 cups)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup granulated or brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice (for apples)

Frying

  • Neutral oil for frying (vegetable or canola), about 2 inches deep in pan

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Fruit Filling: Peel and chop the apples or peaches into small pieces. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter, then add the fruit, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a splash of lemon juice (if using apples). Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the fruit softens but does not become mushy. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely.
  2. Roll Out the Dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pie dough to thin circles about 5-6 inches in diameter. Ensure the dough is thin enough to cook quickly but thick enough to hold the filling without tearing.
  3. Fill and Seal the Pies: Place a spoonful of the cooled fruit filling in the center of each dough circle, leaving space at the edges. Fold the dough over to form a half-moon shape and press the edges firmly together. Crimp the edges with a fork to seal the filling inside completely.
  4. Heat the Frying Oil: Pour enough neutral oil into a deep skillet or pot to reach about 2 inches deep. Heat the oil to 350°F (175°C), using a thermometer to maintain the correct temperature for optimal frying.
  5. Fry the Pies: Carefully place the pies in the hot oil in batches, frying each side for about 3-4 minutes until golden brown and crunchy. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fried pies to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  6. Serve Warm: Enjoy the fried apple or peach pies warm, fresh from the skillet, for the best flavor and texture experience.

Notes

  • Keep dough chilled before rolling to make handling easier and to create a flakier crust.
  • Do not overfill the pies; modest amounts of filling prevent bursting during frying.
  • Maintain oil temperature with a thermometer to ensure even cooking and prevent greasy crust.
  • Drain pies well on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  • Serve immediately for best crispness; fried pies taste best warm.
