Perfect for a wholesome family dinner, ready in under 40 minutes using simple pantry staples and fresh onions. This classic home-cooked meal pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Patties

  • 1 lb 80/20 ground beef
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

For the Onion Gravy

  • 2 medium sweet yellow onions, sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp oil (vegetable or canola)
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour for gluten-free variation)
  • 2 cups beef broth (or vegetable broth for vegetarian option)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently just until combined to avoid tough patties. Shape the mixture into 4 to 6 oval-sized patties.
  2. Brown the Patties: Heat oil and butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4 minutes per side until they develop a nice brown crust. Remove patties and set aside.
  3. Cook the Onions: In the same skillet, add sliced onions and cook on medium heat, stirring occasionally, until soft and caramelized, about 8-10 minutes. The browned bits left from the patties will add extra flavor here.
  4. Make the Onion Gravy: Sprinkle flour over the caramelized onions and stir well to combine. Gradually whisk in beef broth, making sure to scrape any bits off the pan bottom. Let the mixture simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes.
  5. Finish Cooking: Return the browned patties to the skillet, nestling them in the onion gravy. Reduce heat to low, cover, and let simmer for 10 minutes to meld flavors and finish cooking the patties through.

Notes

  • Use ground beef with about 20% fat content for juicier patties.
  • Mix meat ingredients just until combined to keep patties tender; avoid overmixing.
  • Caramelize onions slowly over medium heat for maximum sweetness and flavor.
  • Deglaze the pan with broth to incorporate browned bits for richer gravy.
  • Simmer covered to keep patties moist while finishing cooking.
