Description

Salisbury Steak is a classic American comfort food featuring tender, juicy beef patties smothered in a rich mushroom and onion gravy. Quick to prepare yet full of deep, savory flavors, this hearty dish is perfect for family dinners and pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes, vegetables, or noodles.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 preferred for juiciness)
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Gravy

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon oil (vegetable or canola)
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms (fresh)
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, finely chopped onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined, then shape into oval patties about half an inch thick.
  2. Brown the Patties: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 3-4 minutes on each side until browned. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  3. Sauté Onions and Mushrooms: In the same skillet, add butter and sauté sliced onions and mushrooms until soft and golden brown, about 5 minutes.
  4. Make the Gravy: Sprinkle flour over the onions and mushrooms and stir to coat. Slowly whisk in beef broth, scraping the browned bits from the pan. Simmer until the gravy thickens.
  5. Combine and Simmer: Return patties to the skillet, nestling them in the gravy. Cover and simmer on low heat for 10 minutes, allowing patties to cook through and absorb flavors.

Notes

  • Don’t overwork the meat to keep patties tender.
  • Properly brown patties for best flavor.
  • Use fresh mushrooms for superior gravy taste.
  • Simmer gently to avoid drying out the patties.
  • Adjust gravy thickness by adding broth or flour slurry as needed.
