Cheese
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or mozzarella, Monterey Jack, or a blend)
Vegetables
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 1 garlic clove, minced or 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 cup peas, bell peppers, or other veggies (optional: spinach, broccoli, mushrooms)
Sauce and Seasonings
- 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup or cream sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 tsp dried herbs (such as parsley, basil, or dill)
- Optional: pinch of red pepper flakes or hot sauce for spice
Optional Add-ins
- Splash of milk or cream (to thin sauce if needed)
- Fresh herbs for garnish (parsley, basil, or dill)
Instructions
- Prepare Your Base: Cook your pasta or rice according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside to be ready for combining with sauce and tuna.
- Sauté the Veggies: In a large skillet, heat a little oil over medium heat. Add chopped onions, garlic, and any other vegetables you are using. Sauté until tender and fragrant, about 5 minutes.
- Mix the Sauce: Add the condensed soup or cream sauce to the skillet with the sautéed veggies. Stir gently and let it warm until smooth and bubbly.
- Add Tuna and Cheese: Drain the canned tuna thoroughly and stir it into the sauce. Then, sprinkle in the cheese and continue stirring until the cheese melts and creates a creamy texture.
- Combine with Pasta or Rice: Fold the cooked pasta or rice into the skillet, mixing well so everything is evenly coated in the creamy sauce. Heat through for 2-3 minutes to let flavors meld.
Notes
- Drain Tuna Well: Ensures the sauce stays rich and not watery.
- Don’t Overcook Pasta: Keeps firmness especially for leftovers.
- Add Cheese Last: Prevents clumping and yields a smooth, creamy sauce.
- Use Fresh Herbs: Add just before serving to brighten flavors.
- Customize the Sauce: Replace condensed soup with homemade béchamel for fresher taste.
